History
Due to its fairly deep passage in the world’s second largest coral barrier reef, Puerto Morelos is one of the oldest seaports in the Yucatan. Until the 1930’s there was a small-gage railroad connecting the port to the topical jungle where natives harvested hardwoods and chicle (chewing gum). You can see a chicle camp and mahogany trees at the nearby botanical garden.
