General Information

Population of 2,400 people. Home of The University of Mexico’s Marine Science Research Installation. Lots of restaurants, money exchange, grocery store, small shops, church, fishing and natural trades school, town square (dances on Saturday night). The people of Puerto Morelos are very warm, friendly, and outgoing. The park in the center of town is a gathering place at day’s end. Children’s games, basketball, music and gossip are daily events. History

Due to a fairly deep passage through the world’s second largest coral barrier reef, Puerto Morelos is one of the oldest seaports in the Yucatan. Until the 1930’s there was a small-gage railroad connecting the port to the topical jungle, where natives harvested hardwoods and chicle (chewing gum). You can see a chicle camp and mahogany trees at the nearby botanical garden.
